Got a few grand and no taste? Step this way!

Mention the words “personalised numberplate” on Twitter and you’ll quickly find your mentions are full of angry and disgusted fellow motorists. Which is dangerous territory when I (not so) embarrassingly admit to owning one.
The new ’68 plates are due on 1st September, leading to a whole new range of GB, CB, BB-lettered interpretations. Brexit numberplate, anyone? Or maybe a softer BU68LES? We’ll have to see what the DVLA are going to restrict before the plates hit the market.
Any plates with BUM, SEX, or ASS at the end (no giggling at the back please) are automatically banned, as are letter combos that would be easily recognised – SL__ UTS, TO__ SER, WA__ KER – you get the idea.
But in the interim, the DVLA recently its summer sale of existing plates, filled with the usual array of obscure, tedious and embarrassing registrations.
Have a name? There’s the choice of AL17SON (which sold for £6,010), BOB 808S (£3,030), DEB 1BE (£3,500), PA11 ULS (£7,510), ROR 11Y (£2,430), TO11 MMY (£6,240) or WH17 NEY (I will always love, my personalised number plate. At £10,910. Some big soul fans out there, clearly.)
Got a job? What about CAB 888Y (taxi driver, bargain £910), CEM 15T (chemist… at £6,010) TEA 6OY, (entry-level publishing assistant – £3,110), MAC 800K (Starbuck’s hipster at £5,010) or even BED 200M (Duvet salesperson? Lady of the night? Big earner all the same at £1,710). Clearly the UK’s bin collectors are paid more than we think, too – RUB 115H went for a staggering £13,660.
Are you Jesus? You’ve got the choice of B18 LES (£1,480) or E457 TER (£1,130). Get one of them on the Pope Mobile.
Or do you own a car worth almost as much as the numberplate? Those committed to tying the registration to the car can go for model specific – 911 BS (yep, you guessed it, another bank busting £18.610), 25 FER (£10,510), F80 RED (£2,910), HEN 123Y (£1,330), JAG 4R (£6,260), MC18REN (£7,500), or 720 AT (£2,920). Or YE11 LOW (£3,530).
Clearly the UK’s bin collectors are paid more than we think, too – RUB 115H went for a staggering £13,660.
Missed out this time? The next DVLA auction takes place over the 19th-21st of September, or get your ideas ready for the ’68 plates in the coming weeks.
In the meantime, I’ll take RE66 ECA – for a bargain £5,160.
