Driver of the week – Aseel Al Hamad

Each week we have a little look at a lesser-known name in the world of motoring. And we’re not even limiting it to women – just anyone that doesn’t own a yacht in Monaco.

001_Saudi racing driver, Aseel Al Hamad celebrates the end of the ban on women drivers and the launch of World Driving Day with a lap of honour in a Jaguar F-TYPE

100 years ago this year, the British suffragettes finally won their battle to get women the vote.

While their ability to fly a plane or act as a senior neurosurgeon still seem to arouse debate in the bottom half of internet discussions, women over here are doing pretty well. Alas not the same can be said elsewhere in the world.

Women in Saudi Arabia were finally granted the legal right to drive within their own country in June. Cue celebrations around the world.

None moreso than from professional Saudi Arabian racing driver, Aseel Al Hamad, who up until then, hadn’t even been allowed behind the wheel in her own country, let alone continue her professional career on home soil.

Aseel is a motoring pioneer and the first female board member of the Saudi Arabian Motor Federation, as well as serving the Saudi Arabian representative at Women in Motorsport Commission for Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA).

She celebrated with a lap in the new Jaguar F-Type, saying “Having loved cars since I was a child, today is highly emotional for me. This is the best driving moment of my life.”
